The film, In Pursuit of Temples in the Sky, accompanies a 392-page publication consisting of a large body of photographic work that spans across seven chapters. The piece of work uses both film and still images in its exploration of uniting the worlds of religion and sexuality (i.e. Sikhism and Homosexuality), and presents itself as a one-off volume of visual work.
In order to construct narratives that inform its visual direction, each of the seven chapters is developed using 3 tracks;
(1) the body of work of poet Avtaar Singh Paash,
(2) excerpts from the poetry of Richard Siken and,
(3) The Seven Sins of Memory by Daniel L. Schacter, Harvard University.
The writings of the poets are examined, dismantled, and then assembled through overlapping themes that are identified and used in the formation of visual narratives. In response to imagining a reality in which these concepts co-exist, the study of the Seven Sins of Memory is applied, which aids in informing the techniques in which the writings of Paash and Siken are interpreted into imagery.
Directed and presented as a publication trailer, the film draws reference to the work of theatre stage director, Dimitris Papaioannou in its pacing of the film. This is done through the use of fast cuts placed next to incredibly slow-moving stills.
In Pursuit of Temples in the Sky runs for a duration of 2 min and 21 seconds and places six unique settings within a single frame, mimicking the happenings of multiple on-stage acts. When viewed in completion, it introduces a fictional world in which the worlds of Sikhism and Homosexuality collide.
